Vitamin B12 and its role in our body
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that helps keep the body's nerve and blood cells healthy. It is also essential for the synthesis of DNA during cell division and therefore is especially important for rapidly multiplying cells, such as blood cells. Humans are not capable of producing Vitamin B12 in their body and the vitamin B12 deficiency can cause anemia and severe nervous system damages.
Vegans and Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is only found naturally in foods from animal sources (including dairy products and eggs). However commercially available B12 supplements (including B12 for the foods fortification) are achieved through fermentation of selected microorganisms. The only reliable vegan sources of B12 are fortified foods and B12 supplement.
