What is a urinary tract infection (UTI)?

A UTI is an infection anywhere in the urinary tract including kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate (in men), and urethra. E.coli is responsible for 80-90% of UTIs where the bacteria will enter the urethra and travel upwards to infect other areas of the urinary tract. The symptoms of UTI can include burning with urination (urethritis); pelvic pressure, blood in urine, and lower belly discomfort (cystitis); and back or side pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting (pyelonephritis). Unfortunately, it is common for UTIs to reoccur with up to 1/3rd of women experiencing recurrent infections after their first episode.

What are the effects of D-Mannose on UTI?

D-mannose is a monosaccharide naturally found in fruits, such as cranberries, oranges, and mangoes, and produced by our body. D-mannose, used as a dietary supplement, plays a critical role in reducing the risk for UTIs and preventing recurrent UTIs (rUTIs) because D-mannose can prevent bacteria from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract.

In a study involving 60 women who suffered from recurrent UTIs, it was demonstrated that D-mannose was more effective than antibiotic treatment for treating and preventing the recurrence of UTIs. The time to recurrence for the antibiotic treatment was an average of 52.7 days but the D-mannose treatment resulted in an average of 200 days without recurrent infections. Therefore, D-mannose appears to be a safe and promising alternative treatment for UTIs in adult women (1).

What are the effects of Cranberry on UTI?

Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) have been used in traditional medicine for the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infection (UTI) due to their distinctive source of flavonoids, particularly proanthocyanidins, anthocyanidins, and phenolic acids. Cranberry polyphenols function as anti-adhesive agents that prevent pathogens from sticking to the cells that line the urinary tract (2). Cranberry has also been shown to help alleviate the symptoms of UTIs by decreasing pain and inflammation.

A randomized, placebo-controlled study found that a cranberry supplement had the ability to prevent the adhesion of E.coli in the urinary tract greater than placebo for up to 24 hours (2).
