Glucosamine & MSM
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and leads to mobility decline,
pain, stiffness, and swelling due to degeneration of the joint cartilage between bones.
Administration of supplements such as glucosamine and MSM have become popular
treatments for pain relief and for joint preservation in middle-aged and elderly
populations.

Glucosamine
Glucosamine, used as a building block of proteoglycans, is a key biological component
of joint cartilage and helps regenerate damaged cartilage. The gel-like proteoglycans
have a strong affinity for water and provide flexibility and cushioning. A glucosamine
therapy can play critical roles in the progression of osteoarthritis, in addition to
decreasing pain and enhancing the ability of motion in affected joints. Glucosamine
sulfate forms are better absorbed by our body and are effective to reduce symptoms of
osteoarthritis if they are used at a daily oral dose of 1,500 mg (1).
A study showed that oral glucosamine supplementation has positive effects on the
functional ability and pain relief in persons who experience regular knee pain due to
prior cartilage injury and/or osteoarthritis (2).

MSM
MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is a naturally occurring sulfur compound with beneficial
effects on osteoarthritis including inflammation, cartilage preservation, range of motion
and physical function, antioxidant capacity, and oxidative stress. Sulfur is a component
of cartilage and a deficiency of sulfur has been linked to joint complications. In studies
with osteoarthritic populations given MSM daily, significant improvements were
observed not only in inflammation and cartilage preservation but also in physical
function (3). Combination therapies, such as glucosamine with MSM have become more
popular recently due to the permeability enhancement provided by MSM.

A study found that MSM decreased symptoms of pain and physical function impairment
without adverse effects and showed improvement in performing activities of daily living
associated with the overall health-related quality of life (4).
