PRODUCT RESEARCH / SAFETY
Product Research / Safety
What Is Inulin?
Inulin is a naturally occurring soluble dietary
fibre found in various plants, including chicory
root (Cichorium intybus). It belongs to a group
of carbohydrates known as inulin-type fructans.
Unlike many digestible carbohydrates, inulin passes
through the upper digestive tract largely
undigested and can be fermented by microorganisms
in the large intestine.
Prebiotic and Gut Microbiota Research
Inulin is recognized as a prebiotic ingredient
that can support the growth of beneficial gut
bacteria, including bifidobacteria.
A systematic review and meta-analysis published
in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition
found that chicory-derived inulin-type fructans
increased bifidobacteria abundance in clinical
studies. The amounts studied varied, and results
should not be interpreted as a guarantee of
individual benefit.
Digestive Health and Bowel Regularity
Inulin has been investigated for its effects on
bowel movements, stool consistency and digestive
regularity.
Research suggests that inulin supplementation
may improve certain bowel function measures,
including stool frequency and consistency,
although findings vary among studies.
According to the Nutridom product label,
Organic Inulin Powder helps provide gentle
relief of constipation and/or irregularity
and helps support a healthy digestive system.
